James Fawcus, M.D. Fawcus file, North Shields Library, obituary, Obituaries in the Lancet, Medical Times & Gazette show he was educated at Mill Hill and University College, London. He organised the hospital at Kenkoi, Crimea. Then graduated in London, and in 1859 was appointed to the 49th Native infantry in India, at that time ordered for service in China. Later he became Superintendent of Alipore Gaol with 200 prisoners. He introduced reforms of giving them useful work. He was also Assistant Surgeon in the Civil Hospital, Calcutta.
